Originally developed for explorers and professionals working in environments where distinguishing day from night could be difficult, the Explorer II has always had a more purposeful character than many of Rolex’s other sports watches. The fixed 24 hour bezel and additional 24 hour hand provide a practical second time zone function, while the robust Oyster construction makes it equally suited to everyday wear.
There is something particularly appealing about the 16570 today. It predates the larger, more imposing dimensions of modern Rolex sports models, yet retains sapphire crystal, 100 metres of water resistance and the robust Oyster bracelet. At 40mm, it feels balanced, purposeful and remarkably easy to wear.
