A used luxury watch in Japan can be a good purchase, but a lower yen price does not settle the comparison. You need the amount you will actually pay in Australian dollars, the applicable border charges and a fair comparison of the watches themselves.
Compare the final cost of two equivalent watches. A difference in condition, bracelet, papers or aftercare can matter more than a small saving on the price tag.
Tax rules checked 3 October 2026. Japan’s tourist tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026.
Start with the same watch
Match the reference number, case material, dial and bracelet. Then compare age, visible wear, refinishing, included links, box, papers and service evidence.
Two watches with the same model name may be different references. Two examples of the same reference may also have different service needs or accessories. Ask for photographs of the actual watch and written answers about anything the listing leaves unclear.
An accuracy check is not a documented full service. A seller’s condition grade also needs context. Compare what each seller has disclosed rather than assuming their grading systems mean the same thing.
Are you travelling or ordering online?
| Your situation | Costs to include |
|---|---|
| You are already going to Japan | The watch, payment charges, applicable Australian taxes and extra costs caused by the purchase. Do not charge it with a holiday you would have taken anyway. |
| The seller ships to Australia | The export price, payment charges, freight, appropriate transit cover, taxes and applicable clearance or courier charges. |
| You travel mainly to buy the watch | Include the relevant flights, accommodation and local travel as well as the watch and taxes. |
The passenger allowance does not carry over to a posted purchase. Ask the retailer which price and terms apply to your route before comparing totals. [1]
Which Japanese price can you pay?
For tourist purchases, confirm your eligibility, the shop’s participation and the required documents. Current rules require eligible goods to leave Japan. They also set a minimum purchase of ¥5,000 excluding tax at the same shop on the same day. Since 1 April 2025, personally mailing a tourist tax-free purchase home does not qualify for that exemption. Confirm the correct purchase and export arrangement with the retailer before paying. [2]
Until 31 October 2026, qualifying purchases can be made at tax-exclusive prices. For purchases from 1 November 2026, eligible visitors pay the tax-inclusive price and complete the departure tax-free procedure within 90 days of purchase. Have the goods available before checking in luggage. Any refund follows confirmation that the goods are leaving Japan and is handled by the shop or its refund provider. Confirm how much will be refunded, when and by which method. Keep the initial payment and later refund separate in your budget. [3]
An online export order needs the seller’s export quote. A price offered to an eligible visitor in the shop is not automatically an offer to ship that watch to Australia.
If the watch has a crocodile, alligator or other regulated animal-material strap, check the export and Australian import requirements before paying or arranging delivery. A personal-baggage exemption does not automatically apply to a posted purchase. Check the Australian Government’s wildlife guidance for travellers and online shoppers.

What happens when you bring it into Australia?
For an adult passenger, the general-goods concession is A$900. Watches belong to that category. If the allowance is exceeded, applicable duty and tax are assessed across the goods in that category, not just the amount over A$900. Declare the purchase and keep the receipt. Wearing a newly purchased watch does not establish the exemption for goods you have owned and used overseas for at least 12 months. [1]
Duty and GST are separate. The current Australian tariff lists watches correctly classified under tariff item 9102.21.00 at a free rate of duty. That item does not cover every automatic watch; the case material and other characteristics affect classification. Confirm the correct item for the actual watch rather than assuming either 0% or 5% duty. Buying a Swiss watch in Japan does not make its origin Japanese. [4]
For taxable watch imports, GST is 10% of the total of the customs value, any duty, and the cost of transporting and insuring the goods to Australia. A shipped order also needs its own clearance calculation. Confirm applicable processing, biosecurity and carrier charges; they are not interchangeable with passenger-baggage costs. [5], [6].
Customs uses its export-day exchange rate. Your bank’s conversion and payment fees may differ. Keep those two calculations separate. [7]
How a small apparent saving can disappear
This is a hypothetical passenger example, not a current listing or a Watch Collector quote. Assume an eligible tourist purchase before November, a complete steel automatic watch, an A$8,000 purchase amount and the same A$8,000 customs value. The passenger allowance is exceeded, with no additional taxable transport or insurance amount in this simplified calculation.
| Assumed cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Watch payment after currency conversion | A$8,000 |
| Payment charge, assumed at 1.5% | A$120 |
| Customs duty, assumed applicable rate 0% | A$0 |
| Australian GST, 10% of A$8,000 | A$800 |
| Subtotal | A$8,920 |
Against a hypothetical A$9,000 Australian all-in offer, only A$80 remains before any other purchase-related costs. That does not prove the Australian watch is better. It shows why a narrow price gap needs careful checking. The numbers and watch equivalence are assumptions, not market evidence.
Compare what happens after the purchase
Read the return and warranty terms for the actual buying channel. Ask who handles a fault, where the watch must go and who pays transport. Confirm any remaining manufacturer cover from the watch’s documents. Do not treat a seller warranty as evidence of a recent overhaul.
Before paying, have the final price, tax treatment, included items, condition disclosures and aftercare terms together. A Japanese offer can still be the better option when the remaining saving or the particular watch justifies it.
